My name is Ebony Stitch. It says in my papers that I am a Danish Swedish Farm Dog, but I was made in Sweden the winter of 2006 on a dairy farm just up the road from here. So why do I blog? Because I need a place to moan about my sister, our cat and my humans.

Hello! I don’t have a pet and wouldn’t exactly describe myself as an animal lover but i’m very much interested in the cause of raising awareness about the intelligence, emotions, and consciousness of non-human animals. i’m basically with the scientific view that we, hominins, are not special and unique animals in the sense that place us on a superior position to other animals. my interest in this cause stems from another issue, though: elimination of dehumanization. most people believe non-human animals are inferior to us and therefore their beings and lives are of little to no importance especially in contrast with our beings and lives. when people practice dehumanization, they consider the target as animal (inferior and her/his life is dispensable; entitled to no rights). my idea is: if people are exposed to the accumulating evidence that non-human animals are like us in every sense, then they’ll value their lives and respect their rights, thus dehumanization would be meaningless and baseless because we’d all have the same rights with regard to life, self, and entitlement.
aeon magazine (aeon.co) published several essays on the intelligence, emotions, and consciousness of non-human animals. i think you’d like to take a look.

How pleasant it is to read your views on the relationship between humans and non-humans. I have now gone to aeon magazine and am enjoying the content just as you suggested. Thanks for the tip. I was raised in the church where emotions are deemed the most important part of the human. Later I found that emotion is a central motor in the scientific and business world as well. Now of course science is teaming with new discovery about the importance of emotion to intelligence, survival and humanity. Darwin thought emotions were merely left over from our animal past. (oops) But of interest is that we share the brain’s bits and pieces that make up our most beloved human traits with much of the animal kingdom. When people describe the human as being different because some of our anatomy is unique, including the parts of our brain that have helped us adapt to our environment, it is difficult to see how that would give us ownership to all resources on earth. If these human-specific adaptations have given us more logic than other animals I fail to see how that relates to us using sentient beings as inanimate resources. Instead I’m thinking that behavior is related to eating habits, territorial instincts and so forth. The self-preserving mechanisms of our minds offer us the logic of rationalization to explain ‘bad’ behavior to the emotional, logical and spiritual bits of our minds. But all of this aside, as long as we live in preconceived relationships to other species, we are limiting our opportunities for discovery. When we position the ‘others’ below us, we substitute observation for learning on higher levels of communication and interaction. Last but not least, are we not denying ourselves of some of our most valued attributes, cooperation, stewardship, compassion and the ability to find humane solutions to our own survival?

and you know what? cognitive sciences have proved humans rationality is overrated with all the biases in our “thinking”. in fact, it turned out that we avoid thinking 😀 (thinking, fast and slow: daniel kahnemen)so basically, we’re on auto-pilot by default and for most of the time as much as any form of life is. the more we know ourselves, the sooner we get back to our old view of our fellow animals; that we’re all the same (i’d like to think). thanks for the insights! and glad you’re enjoying aeon 😉

I’ve noticed dogs make people nicer to each other. People walking dogs are friendlier than those walking alone. There seems to be a dog-owner brotherhood that transcends nationality, race, or religion. That’s an important job, one that none of the world governments have been able to fill.
